Residence card is your identity

The Residence Card is emitted at Japan’s main airports and will be your identity document in Japan.

When a foreigner pretends to work in Japan, the Japanese government requires a long-stay visa.  The visa must be issued by the Japanese consulates in your country. When arriving in Japan, the Imigration Sector at the airports must issue the “Zairyu Card ” document, which will be your Residence Card. This identification card has a chip with basic information and it must be in possession daily, because it can be requested at any time by any government agency. 

The airports that emit the Zairyu Card when arriving in Japan are: Chitose (Sapporo, Hokkaido), Narita (Chiba), Haneda (Tóquio), Chubu, Kansai (Osaka), Hiroshima and Fukuoka. For the foreigner that landed at other airports, Immigration will stamp your passport, so that you can request the issuance of the Zairyu Card at the City Hall where you reside.
