Regular vaccinations for children in Japan are free

See the table below that indicates the recommended age for immunization.

Check with your regular doctor regarding the immunizations your child will receive and the schedule. The numbers (1, 2, etc.) indicate the number of times the vaccine has been applied (For example, 1 means “1st time” and 2 means “2nd time”).

Periodic Immunization Vaccinations

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in Japanese インフルエンザ菌b型(Hib)

There are 4 doses applied in the second, third, fourth or fifth month and the last one between 12 and 18 months

Hepatitis B (HBV) B型肝炎

There are 3 doses applied in the second, third, seventh, or eighth month.

Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, and Polio (DTAP-IPV) 四種混合(DPT-IPV)

There are 4 doses applied in the third, fourth, fifth or sixth month and the last one in the 18th month

BCG

One dose applied in the sixth or seventh month

Measles and rubella (MR) 麻しん・風しん(MR)

There are 2 doses applied at 12 to 15 months and the last one between 5 and 6 years

Varicella (Chicken Pox) 水痘(水ぼうそう)

There are 2 doses applied in the 12 to 15 month and the last one in the 18 month

Japanese Encephalitis 日本脳炎

There are 4 doses applied in two phases:

Initial phase : children between 3 ~ 7 years and 6 months, there are 2 doses after reaching 3 years of age, 1 ~ 4 weeks apart.

1st phase reinforcement : 1 dose after 1 year from the end of the application of the initial phase.

2nd phase : 4th year of elementary school

1 dose during the 4th year of elementary school.

Diphtheria and Tetanus (DT) 二種混合(DT)

One dose being applied from 11 to 12 years of age

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) ヒトパピローマウイルス(HPV

There are 3 doses applied between the ages of 13 and 14.

Optional Immunization

Monovalent Rotavirus ロタウイルス1価

There are 2 doses applied in the second and third month.

Pentavalent Rotavirus ロタウイルス5価

There are 3 doses applied in the second, third, and fourth month.

Mumps おたふくかぜ

There are 2 doses applied at 12 months and 5 years.

Influenza インフルエンザ

It should be taken every year after the age of 13.

(*) The example of the above schedule of optional vaccination is recommended by the Japanese Academy of Pediatrics.

(*) For rotavirus, the vaccination is an attenuated (monovalent) human rotavirus vaccine administered orally, or an attenuated pentavalent rotavirus vaccine administered orally.
