In order to drive cars, trucks and motorcycles, the Japanese government requires a driver’s license.
For people who want to drive in Japan, the Japanese government requires a Japanese or international driver’s license (issued by member countries of the Geneva International Traffic Treaty), of which countries like Brazil and Vietnam are not part, which is valid for one year.
For holders of driving licenses from countries such as France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Taiwan, duly accompanied by a Japanese translation, the document will be valid for one year from the date of entry.
For those who have a driver’s license from non-member countries, you can obtain a Japanese license as follows:
- The original driver’s license must be more than 3 months old
- Be within the validity period of the issuing country.
Where to apply:
The interested person must go to a Police Station near his or her residence, or to the Driver’s License Centers that exist all over Japan.
Necessary documents:
- Certificate of Residence stating the nationality (for Japanese citizenship it should state the official domicile)
- Residence Card (Zairyu Card) or Certificate of Special Residence “Tokubetsu Eijyu Shomeisho”
- One photo (3 x 2.5 cm taken within the last six months)
- Foreign Driver’s License
- Foreign Driver’s License Translation
Translations should only be made by Embassies, Consulates, the JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) or a sworn translator. - Passport (all passports in your possession)
- Identity card for those with a Brazilian or Chinese driver’s license.
- Fee payment
- Other documents may be requested
Exams:
There will be sight tests, hearing tests, knowledge of the Japanese traffic system, and finally the driving skill test.
The written test can be taken in English, Portuguese and Chinese, depending on the region where you live.
