Registration at City Hall

When arriving in Japan, you need to register at the City Hall to do the registration of your address and the visa type.

When arriving in Japan with a medium and long term visa, the foreigner will receive, in his passport, the authorization stamp and the Zairyu Card.

So, the first step to regularize your situation in Japan is to go to the City Hall of your city (or City Hall from your district) and search for the Foreigner Registry counter with your passport and the residence card. At the counter, you will fill out a document and inform the address where you will reside. This process must be done within 14 days after entering Japan. It’s recommended to be done in the first week.

For those who didn’t receive the Zairyu Card upon entering Japan, the document must be requested at the same moment you request the address registration at the City Hall.
