Will you get married? See what are the rules for registering marriage for foreigners in Japan
For foreigners who want to get married in Japan, the country allows and recognizes the union as long as the marriage is registered at the prefecture where one of the spouses resides. To make these registrations, the bride and groom must present a series of personal documents at the local city hall, along with a completed marriage registration form (konin todoke).
The personal documents that need to be provided are determined by the nationality of the bride and groom, and vary according to each municipality. If you have any questions, go to the municipality where your domicile is registered, and look for the marriage section.
After registering the marriage at the local municipality, it will be necessary to also register the marriage in the General Consulate of the bride and groom’s country so that the marriage is valid in both countries.
